Today, I’m very happy to announce we are making a beta of Graphics 2.0 available to Corona SDK Pro and Enterprise subscribers!
Our goal with Graphics 2.0 was to enable you to produce cinematic-quality graphics in your mobile apps. We wanted to build a system that let you combine the elements of great visual effects — vector geometry, image processing, motion graphics.

And since Apple just released iOS 7 this week, I’m going to show you how to reproduce the cool translucent glass effect in Corona SDK!

It’s a feature known as normal mapping and it’s a workhorse technique for simulating lighting effects in traditional 3-D graphics. We’re repurposing it so this is trivial to do in Corona.
Yesterday, we invited a small group of developers to participate in an early access version of Graphics 2.0 that we’re calling a Developer Preview.
The idea behind this preview is to get some initial feedback while giving us the flexibility to change API’s, stabilize moving parts, and add more features.
One of our goals with the new graphics engine is to enable vector graphics in Corona. We’re aiming for Illustrator-level capabilities that’s going to give you a new level of expressiveness in app development.
Things get incredibly interesting when vector capabilities and raster images are fused into one. Like being able to place an image inside a vector shape.
In Corona‘s graphics model, groups have been the workhorse way of organizing objects hierarchically. When you modify a group’s properties, the children are affected. For example, if you set the alpha on a group, then each child’s alpha is effectively multiplied by that alpha of the parent group.
The new graphics engine is going to have a new kind of group called a Container.
This week I wanted to give you some more eye candy from our next-generation graphics engine to demonstrate how easy it will be to add filter effects to your app.
Like in the 2.5D quadrilateral distortion preview, we’ve modified the Fishies sample app. This time, we’ve taken the background aquarium image and created a 3×3 grid. Then we applied a filter effect to each tile.
