During this week’s Corona Geek we hung out with Brian Burton, Ed Maurina, Gerald Bailey, Matthew Chapman, David Roulin, Nate Sweet, and Søren Nielsen. We recapped Global Game Jam from Abilene Texas to Lyons France and we discussed Esoteric Software’s wildly successful Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to extend the Spine, 2D skeletal animation tool. See the show notes below for more details.

This week’s t-shirt winner was Brent Rusk. Brent followed Corona Geek on social media and then completed the Corona Geek giveaway registration form for a chance to win a Corona Labs t-shirt. Congratulations Brent!

Geek Speak

  • Global Game Jam Recap – Brian Burton and David Roulin shared their experiences at this year’s Global Game Jam. Dr. Burton hosted a jam in Abilene Texas where he teaches mobile developing using Corona SDK and David Roulin, Corona Ambassador, participated in a jam in Lyon France where he was able to produce a feature complete game in 48 hours as a one person team. David was very modest about the accomplishment and reminded us that working solo really isn’t the spirit of the jam, but I think he did an awesome job and showed just how easy it is for one person to accomplish a lot using Corona SDK. David will also be participating in the upcoming Paris BeMyApp hackathon.
  • Spine Kickstarter Project –  we also talked with Nate Sweet & Søren Nielsen, developers of Spine, a 2D skeletal animation tool. As of this writing, these guys have raised almost $20K as part of a Kickstarter project to expand Spine to support Corona SDK and other runtimes.  Their campaign has been wildly successful and they surpassed their original $12K goal in just 3 days. They have already implemented support for Corona SDK and there are still 18 days to go on the campaign. They were fun to talk with and are doing some great work in the 2D animation space.
  • Game Coder – I also mentioned Game Coder, the new iPad based game development tool that was recently released by Beelieve. Game Coder which is a new iOS app that allows you to build a game on your iPad. In Corona Geek, episode #25 Ricardo Rauber Pereiraexplained how projects can be exported to Corona for editing and then published for iOS devices. It’s an amazing tool that was built using Corona SDK. Check out the hangout with Ricardo.

Closing thoughts

At the end of this episode we did a bit of a round table to give panelists an opportunity to talk about what they were working on. Here are a few of the things that were mentioned.

  • Brian Burton is working on his next Corona SDK beginners book, which is written for beginners with no prior knowledge of programming. It’s not out yet, but is expected to be released very soon.
  • Ed Maurina has released a library of Corona SDK game templates. Some of the templates are free and some are paid. Each template includes the source code and assets necessary to build the game.
  • Gerald Bailey  is working on an Enterprise Corona project that will be shown off at the NADA Auto Show next week.
  • Matthew Chapman has released some updates to his Bar Exam Apps.
